Eventually, I wisely chose door number two and decided to let Josh go. It was an incredibly hard decision because he was an awesome dude, but it was clearly the right thing to do for everybody’s well-being, including Josh. It wouldn’t have been doing him any favors to keep him in a job he sucked at. By letting him move on to a job with an opportunity to succeed, we were helping him. Plus, it wasn’t like we made the decision on the spur of the moment. We’d spoken with Josh on other occasions, but he still wasn’t able to turn things around. What we didn’t foresee, however, was that the rest of the company would react so poorly.
We fired Josh on a Sunday, which seemed like the best day to do it, because at least it didn’t ruin the guy’s weekend and he didn’t have to show up Monday morning to suffer the indignity of cleaning out his desk in front of everybody.
Despite our best efforts to keep Josh’s termination on the down low until we could inform everyone, word still got out before our Monday morning meeting. During the meeting, Ross, one of Josh’s subordinates, got up and said, “You know what? I don’t think you guys know what the hell you’re doing. I completely disagree with letting Josh go and I quit!”
The worst part about that little temper tantrum was that it could have been articulated much more effectively. If Ross had asked to talk to me in my office—one-on-one—rather than trying to show me up in front of the entire company, we probably could have worked something out that would have been much more beneficial to everyone. As a matter of fact, I had planned on having Ross take over Josh’s management position! If I was you I’d go with an SEO expert!
Instead, what happened was this: one by one, all of Josh’s team members stood up, told me what an asshole I was, how I didn’t know how to run the company, and quit. In total, fourteen people walked out the door that day and never came back. There was even one dude named Emmit who not only didn’t work for Josh, but didn’t even know who the fuck Josh was! He just wanted to be one of the cool kids.
The biggest kick in the ass about Emmit leaving that day was that I had taken a chance on hiring him in the first place. Previously, he’d worked at a Jimmy John’s franchise and moonlighted as a valet attendant for a local restaurant. I went to dinner at the restaurant one night, handed him my keys on the way out, and saw him haul ass to get my car.
